The City of Port Coquitlam has an exciting opportunity in the Parks Department for an Urban Forestry Tree Technician. Reporting to the Parks Supervisor the Urban Forestry Tree Technician inspects prunes climbs plants and removes trees. They also deal with the public regarding complaints or inquiries relating to tree matters provide information and assistance to internal and external contacts regarding municipal or community tree matters and direct the work of contractors engaged in urban forest maintenance tasks.

Some of the key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Inspects trees on municipal property; identifies tree pests diseases and over-mature and problem trees; in consultation with the Parks Supervisor determines required treatment such as climbing limbing topping cabling bracing or removal; prepares risk assessments and recommendations for remedial action; and undertakes the required work or reviews required work by private contractors.
  • Receives and responds to complaints from the public regarding a variety of tree related matters such as fallen trees broken or hazardous tree limbs grading and root obstructions homeless concerns overgrown vegetation and invasive plant species and garbage and litter debris.
  • Provides information assistance and interpretation in writing and verbally to the general public and to internal and external contacts regarding municipal tree matters problems and applicable policies and regulations.
  • Prepares risk assessments; maintains and completes urban forestry maintenance schedules; performs inspections; and prepares recommendations related to tree planting and maintenance projects.
  • Assists in homeless camp identification and removal.
  • Identifies and removes garbage and litter from along the trail corridor municipal parks and trail heads.
  • Performs related work as required

The successful candidate for this position will have:

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods practices tools equipment and safety precautions used in the pruning removals and planting of deciduous and coniferous trees.
  • Sound knowledge of urban forestry principles practices and procedures and of tree species diseases pests and treatment methods.
  • Ability to perform climbing and pruning tasks at considerable heights above the ground.
  • Skill in the use of safety harness and ropes and a variety of hand and power tools used in climbing pruning and felling of trees.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team environment.
  • Completed a two-year diploma program in forestry arboriculture or horticulture from a recognized post- secondary institution supplemented by recognized training courses in tree climbing.
  • 2 years of related experience; or a combination of training and experience.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License
  • Certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture
