Description

The Public Rights Branch pursues civil enforcement matters including complex high impact matters focusing on a variety of areas including unfair business and housing practices wage theft environmental protection consumer protection nuisance abatement and cannabis regulation. The Branch uses a variety of statutory authorities including the Unfair Competition Law the False Advertising Law the Public Nuisance Law and various Health & Safety Code regulations. The Branch also pursues False Claims Act and other civil claims and engages in debt collection for the City.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Paralegal will work closely with Branch attorneys and perform paralegal assignments typical of complex document intensive litigation. This includes eDiscovery cite checking briefs preparing exhibits assisting with discovery responses and document productions summarizing and organizing discovery and evidence gathering necessary documents and interviewing City employees and third parties. The Paralegal may also be assigned to assist with preparing motions memos and pleadings to perform legal research using Westlaw and other research tools and to analyze and organize documents and exhibits. The Paralegal may also be assigned to handle computer-based tasks to support the Branchs various investigations to interact with court staff and to perform other administrative duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • (1) A certificate of completion of an accredited paralegal training program or (2) a degree from a postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester units or the equivalent in law-related courses which has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.


  • Substantial experience working on complex document intensive litigation and with eDiscovery is preferred.
  • A self-motivated quick learner who can exercise independent judgment and is able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Applicants must possess impeccable ethics excellent organizational skills and have the ability to work well with attorneys and staff of this Office personnel from other agencies and members of the public.
  • The hours for this position are generally from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; however some flexibility and overtime hours may be required. Reliable attendance and punctuality are mandatory.

Current Location

201 N. Figueroa Street Los Angeles California. Position is subject to assignment at any location of the Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney.


Probation

Appointment to this exempt position (non-Civil Service) will be subject to a one-year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successfully completing this probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
