Job Summary:

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM) invites applications for a full-time faculty position (1.0 FTE) at any/open rank (Assistant Associate Full Professor) in the Department of Medical Education to contribute to curriculum design education and curriculum leadership in the discipline of medical humanities and health justice. Candidates with training in the medical/health humanities (including health-related social sciences and the arts) are encouraged to apply. Teaching and research expertise could include but are not limited to medical/health humanities health justice social determinants of health and advocacy and community-engaged scholarship. A successful candidate will help support the teaching and research efforts of the Center for Medical Humanities and help lead curriculum content in the area of health justice as integrated into the Systems Society and Humanism in Medicine (SSHM) core in the MD program. Experience with assessment and evaluation is desired but not required.

GCSOM was established in Scranton PA in 2008 through the grassroots efforts of visionary individuals who foresaw what a community-based medical school would bring to the region and worked to make it a reality. GCSOM is part of Geisinger College of Health Sciences and includes a School of Nursing School of Graduate Education and a Research Institute distributed over six regional campuses. This position is based in the Scranton PA campus.

The MD Curriculum is an integrated active learning-based curriculum built on the clinical presentation model and uses emerging neurobiological evidence on knowledge acquisition skill development and wellness to shape a robust approach to medical school teaching and learning. The curriculum also features our Systems Society and Humanism in Medicine (SSHM) core composed of longitudinal themes that are integrated throughout the curriculum meant to transform socially responsible students into socially accountable leaders in the healthcare system and their addition Geisingers longstanding commitment to patient access and clinical excellence has been a driving force in shaping our approach to medical education. The GCSOM curriculum also provides a strong foundation in research offering a robust range of research opportunities including: a four-year Medical Research Honors Program a Summer Research Immersion Program and other longitudinal research opportunities.

Job Duties:

  • Report to the Director of the Center for Medical Humanities and the Director of SSHM.
  • Serve as a member of a faculty discipline team and work in collaboration with team members to develop and deliver relevant content for courses in the MD program.
  • Contribute to the offerings of the Center for Medical Humanities including medical humanities teaching public events and research.
  • Contribute to the medical humanities courses in the school of graduate studies.
  • Provide leadership in health justice in the MD program.
  • Assist the Director of SSHM with administrative duties.
  • Provide instruction/facilitation as part of a multidisciplinary team using our active learning/evidenced-based pedagogy in the MD program.
  • Develop or participate in collaborative scholarship in medical/health humanities and/or medical education.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars trainings workshops the current literature and professional affiliations regarding trends and practices in medical education.
  • Participate in service to the department institution and field of interest.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in medical/health humanities field (humanities arts social sciences) or terminal medical degree (MD DO) with educational training in medical/health humanities.
  • Experience in higher education with specific experience in one or more of these areas: medical/health humanities health justice medical/health education.
  • Experience with active learning/flipped classroom/evidence-based pedagogy (e.g. Case Based Learning Team Based Learning Problem-Based Learning simulation).
  • Demonstrated ability or potential for developing scholarship in medical/health humanities and/or medical education that comports with academic rank.
  • Preferred candidates will have experience in course leadership and/or leading teams of faculty and experience working with community partners.
