Role Summary
The Field Technician Network serves as a centralized escalation resource for network-related issues between site-based technicians and the Network Administrator. This role focuses on connectivity troubleshooting wireless performance networked devices and infrastructure support.
This position is intentionally designed as an apprenticeship role providing hands-on exposure to enterprise networking under the mentorship of the Network Administrator with a defined growth pathway toward Junior Network Administrator.
Primary Responsibilities
Escalation Support
- Serve as Tier 2.5 escalation for network and connectivity issues
- Troubleshoot complex wired and wireless connectivity problems
- Analyze patterns in site-reported network issues to identify systemic causes
- Assist during network outages degraded performance events and recovery efforts
Wireless and LAN Support
- Assist with monitoring and troubleshooting access point performance
- Validate Wi-Fi coverage issues and escalate design-level concerns
- Support VLAN subnet and DHCP-related troubleshooting
- Assist with onboarding and troubleshooting approved network-attached devices
Infrastructure Support (Under Supervision)
- Assist with switch firewall and network equipment configuration tasks
- Participate in firmware updates configuration backups and validation testing
- Support redundancy and failover testing exercises
- Assist with structured cabling documentation and troubleshooting
Network Monitoring and Documentation
- Use network monitoring tools to identify anomalies or performance degradation
- Assist in maintaining network diagrams IP documentation and asset inventories
- Document incidents root causes and remediation steps
Policy and Security Enforcement
- Assist in enforcing network access and acceptable use policies
- Support NAC onboarding and troubleshooting under guidance
- Escalate potential security-related network events per protocol
Professional Development and Apprenticeship
- Shadow the Network Administrator during maintenance windows and projects
- Participate in network planning discussions and post-incident reviews
- Gradually assume responsibility for defined network segments or services
Required Skills and Attributes
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Foundational understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP VLANs Wi-Fi)
- Ability to interpret logs metrics and monitoring dashboards
- Comfort working methodically during outages or high-pressure situations
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
Additional Expectations:
Ability to perform any physical duties associated with this position (e.g. lifting up to 25 pounds on a regular basis sitting for long periods of time standing for extended periods of time etc.)
