This position is responsible for the digitization of the activities of Uluulu: The Henry Kuualoha Giugni Moving Image
Archive of Hawaii.
Duties and Responsibilities (*denotes essential functions):

  • *Manage the daily operations of the digital video preservation lab including but not limited to the digitization of archival videotape collection material using specialized software and hardware systems using Final Cut Pro and AJA IO videotape digitization systems.
  • *Implement the departments digital preservation strategy according to archival industrys best practices.
  • *Manage transcode track digital video files and born digital media and assign metadata.
  • *Edit digital video content and design in-house graphics using specialized software programs including but not limited to Final Cut Pro Adobe Premiere Photoshop DVD Studio Pro and other multimedia software to generate website clips and original programs.
  • *Manage the daily operation and maintenance of analog videotape players and monitoring equipment and communicate with the video engineer and vendors to ensure proper video signal flow in the digital preservation lab.
  • *Communicate with RECOLLECT technical support to create Web-accessible video content.
  • *Oversee appropriate staff and students in the use of specialized software hardware media files and analog equipment.
  • *Collaborate in the processing of collection materials including but not limited to arrangement description and rehousing.
  • *Work on preservation activities including monitoring environmental conditions of stacks and vault inspecting collection materials and making recommendations for preservation priorities.
  • Partner with team members in the department with administrative duties for the daily operation of the archives including maintaining and ordering office and archival supplies communication with building facilities staff and communication with UH administration.
  • Provide reference services and answer research questions as needed.
  • Assist with the archives internship and volunteer programs.
  • Prepare and clean archival videotapes for digitizing using specialized software and hardware including the SAMMA U-matic and Beta Clean systems.
  • Compile monthly and annual statistics analyze results and run reports related to digital preservation file management on servers and in-house storage arrays website visits and user traffic.
  • Attend and present at national professional archival conferences and workshops about archival digitization and preservation to keep abreast of industry standards and their application to Uluulu.
  • Act as department liaison and communicate with UHWO Information Technology and UH Information Technology Services to ensure proper functioning of archives digital storage and servers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Arts and Sciences or related field with major coursework related to creative media and/or film and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for video production or post-video production; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of moving image archiving and preservation as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with film and video production process and materials associated with a production.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. For supervisor work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Knowledge of various film formats (e.g. 8mm Super8 16mm 35mm) and videotape formats in a wide variety of obsolete playback systems (e.g. 2 Quad 1 ¾ Umatic Betacam SP).
  2. Knowledge of digital video and audio file formats.
  3. Proficiency AJA IO Adobe Premiere Final Cut Pro Photoshop DVD Studio Pro and other videotape digitizing and editing systems.
  4. ExperiencewithRECOLLECTintegratedmediaassetmanagementsoftware.
  5. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  6. Evidence of strong critical thinking skills.
  7. Experience in a collaborative and collegial setting.
  8. Productive attitude and enthusiasm for an innovative and changing environment.
Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Experience with ClimateNotebookenvironmentalanalysis software.
  2. KnowledgeofHawaiianmediahistorycultureandlanguage.
  3. Professional work experience in an academic library orarchives setting.
  4. Experiencegeneratingandvalidatingfilechecksums.
  5. ExperiencewithLinearTape-Openbackupsystems.
  6. Experience using technical analysis and quality control software such as Media Infoand QCtools.
  7. Experience with creating video transcriptions and usingclosed captioningedit software.
  8. Abilitytolift2030-pound boxes.
