The Fred Hutch Division of Radiation Oncology seeks qualified candidates for its two-year Mentored Faculty Physician Scientist Program in Radiation Oncology (MFPSP-RO). A successful applicant will be an MD or MD/PhD who is committed to pioneering major advances in medical practice through research. Applicants should be interested in an aspect of cancer research relevant to the Division of Radiation Oncology including the development of therapies that modulate the response to radiation therapy. Radiation Oncology Physician Scientists Candidates will advance their academic careers by performing oncology and/or radiation biology research with access to state-of-the-art facilities and working with expert faculty members at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington.


The Fred Hutch Division of Radiation Oncology has funding to support the incumbents salary and lab expenses for two years of translational research training. The candidates faculty mentor will provide dedicated space and may support additional laboratory and project funding beyond those available through the MFPSPRO funding. Up to 20% of the candidates effort will be spent in clinical practice. The Physician Scientist is strongly encouraged to work with their mentor to apply for outside funding during their first year.

Responsibilities

The Physician Scientist in this Program will develop a research project under the guidance of a FH RO faculty mentor. Projects may be predominantly clinical correlative or laboratory-based but must be broadly focused on the development and/or improvement of cancer radiotherapy. Candidates may identify projects that require guidance from more than one mentor as long as one mentor is a Physician Scientist faculty member of the Division of Radiation Oncology. Candidates may identify potential research projects and mentors as part of their application for the Physician Scientist Program. The Physician Scientist will participate in outpatient Radiation Oncology Clinic at Fred Hutch Cancer Centers South Lake Union Medical Center on the Fred Hutch campus. Clinical duties may be performed independently for board certified / board eligible candidates who must obtain a WA State Medical License though guidance from established Radiation Oncology Attending faculty will be provided as for all junior faculty and instructors. The background and experience of the applicant will be taken into consideration when planning their clinical activity.

Candidates need to meet minimum requirements for clinical competency and credentialing including passing a background check.

An exceptionally strong history of research in Human Biology Infectious Disease viral oncogenesis Bone marrow transplantation and solid tumor oncology informs and guides progress towards the development of the next generation of curative treatments incorporating cutting edge radiotherapy. Available resources include outstanding staff facilities and the infrastructure necessary to support translational radiobiology research:

  • The first cancer clinic dedicated exclusively to cellular immunotherapy clinical trials Bezos Family Immunotherapy Clinic is located on the Fred Hutch Cancer Center campus.
  • Extensive expertise and facilities are available for the manufacture of clinical grade products including cellular biologic and DNA-based therapeutics (TheraP-eutic Products). These facilities support more than 25 investigator- initiated Phase I clinical trials each year.
  • A large network of shared resource laboratories (Shared Resources) is staffed by experts who can assist in cutting-edge experimental design assay development and statistical analyses.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MD MD/PhD or foreign equivalent
  • Completion or in the final year of residency in Radiation Oncology. This position is not ACGME accredited.
  • Demonstrated track record of academic achievement including relevant publications
  • Demonstrated interest and clinical or laboratory accomplishments in cancer research and/or radiation biology research

Qualifications to be clinically active beyond observation status:

  • Be ABR board eligible or certified in Radiation Oncology. Graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
  • Eligible for unrestricted licensure in the state of Washington and an acting instructor appointment at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $199680 to $243360 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
