Background
To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range ofactivities within an established research programme and/or specific research project.
Role Summary
A 3 year project investigating PRMT1 and RNA binding proteins in the replication stress response in lung cancer is available within the lab of Prof. Clare Davies.
The post holder is will be expected to undertake novel cutting-edge laboratory-based research within the field of protein arginine methylation and tumour cell biology specified within an MRC funded research programme. They should have experience of working with PRMT enzymes and the replication stress response and ideally RNA binding proteins.
The post holder will:
Work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to writing bids
Operate within area of specialism
Analyse and interpret research findings and results
Contribute to generating funding
Contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues asset or company sales IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar

Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research with assistance of a mentor if required
Contribute to writing bids for research funding
Analyse and interpret data
Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
Disseminate research findings for publication research seminars etc

Contribute to the work of the research team as a whole; through dialogue with colleagues generation of ideas contributing to preparation of grant applications advising on study design problem solving etc

Keepabreastoftheliteratureandmaintainagoodworkingknowledgeofthe background and current developments in the field of the project
Buildinternal and externalcontactsandparticipateinnetworksfortheexchangeofinformation and for future collaboration
Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
Contribute to enterprise business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University often under supervision of a project leader
Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

Person Specification
First degree in area of specialism and a PhD (or in viva awaiting status) relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
At least one authorshippublished in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
Practicalexperienceof:
Mammalian cell culture
SinglemoleculeDNAfiberanalysis
SIRF and other PLA-based assays (
Working with mouse models of cancer (PIL holder)
Microscopy-basedlaboratorytechniques(includingimmunofluorescence)
Westernblottingandimmunoprecipitation
RNA-sequencing and their analysis
Extensive lentiviral experience to generate genetically altered cell lines
Molecularbiology(includingprimerdesignqPCRDNA/RNAisolation cloningmutagenesisDNAsequencingexpressionplasmidgeneration)
Design and implementation of experiments for Mass Spectrometry
High level analytical capability
The ability to work and think independently and to significantly contribute to the planning of a programme of scientific research (critically required with demonstrable evidence)
Effectiveorganisationalskillsandtheabilitytoprioritiseworktomeetdeadlines
Fluency in relevant models techniques or methods (see above) and ability to contribute to developing new ones
Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes

Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
