TITLE: Central Heating Plant Maintenance Mechanic
REPORTS TO: Central Heating Plant Supervisor
SCHEDULE: Full time weekdays. This position is considered *essential personnel. Schedule may vary according to departmental and Academy needs.
Wage Range: $38.40 - $40.00

Position Purpose
Performs as a key player to the physical plant operation and maintenance of the Central Heating Plant (CHP) and steam distribution equipment on campus. Responsible for the overall maintenance of the CHP steam generation equipment steam distribution system steam hot water heaters and ice rink refrigeration system. Secondary responsibility includes CHP operator covering shifts when scheduled operators are not available.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled and emergency maintenance on steam generation steam distribution and ice rink refrigeration systems.
- Operate maintain and repair boilers heat exchangers pumps valves piping motors compressors steam vaults steam hot water heaters and steam traps while keeping required operational logs including water testing and boiler blow downs.
- Troubleshoot and repair equipment using PLCs meters portable welding equipment and hand and power tools.
- Perform GTAW and SMAW welding on steam generation and distribution piping and related equipment.
- Assist with boiler startups shutdowns cleanings and annual inspections.
- Coordinate and monitor contracted repairs as required.
- Conduct annual steam vault inspections requiring Confined Space Certification and assist with repair coordination.
- Provides back up coverage to the Central Heating Plant Supervisor.
- Work with the Mechanical Team to troubleshoot and repair steam and auxiliary systems.
- Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean work area.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills and Competencies
- Ability to operate service and repair steam plant systems and related equipment included but not limited to; rebuilding centrifugal pumps & steam reducing valves packing valves aligning pumps & motors installing mechanical seals and cleaning steam hot water
- Strong knowledge with steam plant systems and equipment including GTAW and SMAW welding.
- Respect for diversity of identities and experiences an orientation toward equity and inclusion and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills.
- Ability to read and comprehend technical instructions and drawings regarding the operation maintenance and repair of equipment and systems.
- Proficiency in operating computer and automated software including PLCs & spreadsheets.
- Use of electronic work control programs.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and safety standards.

Position Requirements
Education
- High School diploma.
- Previous certification welding carbon steel using the GTAW and SMAW processes preferred.
- Previous OSHA training or certification preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years experience with mechanical maintenance using hand tools to troubleshoot replace repair and service steam plant and auxiliary mechanical equipment.
- Knowledge of Steam Plant Operation required experience preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years experience using GTAW and SMAW weld processes.
- Experience in an institutional or campus setting
- Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and transport up to 60 lbs without assistance.
- Ability to bend kneel and climb stairs ladders and scaffold and work at heights.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to work in extreme hot or cold conditions.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment as appropriate for the assignment.
- Must be physically and mentally capable of performing multiple tasks under stressful situations and to be able to function in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Requirements
- Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
- Clean Driving record (reviewed annually).
