MN350 has launched a new community engagement campaign focused on urban
forestry in Twin Cities environmental justice communities. This project will educate
community members in qualified census tracts about urban forestry issues broaden
MN350s movement for climate justice to include new Black Indigenous and Persons
of Color (BIPOC) volunteer supporters living in Minneapolis Green Zones and support
MN350s overall organizational priority of becoming a catalyst for upgrading
Minnesotas collective narrative on the environment to center environmental and
climate justice.
MN350s part-time Urban Tree Canopy Organizer will organize within Minneapolis
Green Zones to build power and expand MN350s base of engaged supporters winning
campaigns that advance climate justice in Minnesota. New members of MN350s
volunteer base from environmental justice communities will influence the
organizations approach to urban and community forestry as a climate justice issue.
The position will be grounded in MN350s theory of change organizing Minnesotans
to work together to protect our climate and realize the systemic changes necessary to
build a just clean-energy future. The Urban Tree Canopy Organizer relies on a broad
deep and current understanding of Minnesota within the Metro area and can bring
knowledge of the political priorities for a variety of geographic areas
especially Minneapolis. Strong candidates will be skilled in grassroots organizing
building and maintaining strong relationships with volunteers.
The work of the Urban Tree Canopy Organizer supports the growing movement in
Minnesota to repair our public processes and transform our dominant economy into
one that secures clean air clean water a stable climate and an equitable future for
all regardless of race class income or zip code.
KEY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Build MN350s presence in urban forestry inside Minneapolis Green Zones
Meet with project partners to ensure the development plan for MN350 staff
and current volunteer teams understand How to speak about urban
forestry when base building
Work with the volunteer team to schedule weekly meetings with volunteers
and expand volunteer recruitment in neighborhoods across the Northside
Green Zone including Hawthorne McKinley Near North and Marshall
Terrace.
Coordinate with the supervisor to ensure DNR reports are submitted on time
and accurately.
Train and develop volunteer organizers in the understanding of urban
forestry in Twin Cities environmental justice communities
Implement plans and action steps for building teams campaigns and/or
projects
Engage with the Supervisor staff organizing team and volunteer leaders in
discerning the campaign that they and their team will engage in as aligned
with MN350s commitment to climate justice and in concert with the
passions and drive of those on their teams
Facilitate and/or participate in coalitions when those coalitions help further
the goals of the teams that have been built around MN350s climate justice
campaigns
Work within campaign or project budget including tracking budgetary
needs and expenses and participating in volunteer engagement stipend
process
KEY COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

Community stakeholder and public relations: Serve as MN350s
spokespeople and ambassadors as well as act as liaison to leadership
regarding the organization
Fundraising: Ability to ask for money as well as support stewardship of
donors through thank you calls as requested by staff leadership
Strategic direction: Engage in give feedback and collaboratively shape
leadership structures and fundraising strategies to sustain the organization
as requested by staff leadership
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong candidates will:
Have 2 years of professional-level (paid or unpaid) experience in
community or campaign organizing issue advocacy movement building or a
related field
Have experience and a working knowledge of movements for climate justice
and racial justice in Minnesota
Be familiar with the movement landscape in one or more communities
inside the Twin Cities metro area preferably in Minneapolis Green Zones
Have a track record for collaborating effectively within and across diverse
groups of stakeholders while also working independently and taking
appropriate initiative
Have a demonstrated history of using power-building strategies to build
effective and cohesive teams of volunteers and building and maintaining
productive relationships with grassroots volunteers
Be highly organized with a strength in political analysis and community-
based power-building
Have 2 years of experience working in a nonprofit setting and a comfort
level navigating in the nonprofit arena and working effectively to build and
maintain networks and coalitions
Have a working knowledge of state and local political processes with a
proven track record of identifying opportunities for public engagement
Demonstrate an understanding of state and federal 501(c)4 and 501(c)3
nonprofit regulations
Relations & leadership skills:
Relationally organized having significant experience working with Black
Indigenous People of Color broad coalitions and multiracial communities
proven ability to build rapport and trust with others.
Ability to collaborate and integrate grassroots ideas with political realities
Proven commitment to embodied leadership with the ability to cultivate the
leadership of others while also managing several tasks and projects
concurrently
Ability to plan and manage multiple projects consult with various
stakeholders anticipate obstacles manage timelines keep staff and
volunteers engaged and maintain good spirits.
Excellent organizational and prioritization skills; ability to manage an
unpredictable workflow and flexibility to respond thoughtfully and quickly.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Understanding of the structural nature of power and inequity with
demonstrated ability to transform it.
Familiarity with transformative justice healing justice and decolonization
frameworks with a willingness to stretch imagine and manifest practices
within the organizational culture.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Reporting
The Greater MN Organizer reports to the Organizing Director and works
collaboratively with other staff and volunteers at every level.
Location & physical demands
MN350s primary office is in Minneapolis. Work is performed in both remote and in-
person settings as safety guidelines allow and includes significant time using a
computer and phone. Attending in-person staff meetings and office days is required.
Some events are outdoors. Travel within Minneapolis Green Zones is required for
organizing purposes subject to safety guidelines.
Flexibility is required to work outside normal business hours including evenings and
weekends and to occasionally work extended hours to accomplish the organizations
mission.
