Job Summary

Clinical ethics case consultation requests originate from clinicians patients and families in all Corewell Health hospitals and ambulatory care clinic sites but primarily the intensive and critical care units. The incumbent will assist in recruiting training and leading an all-volunteer staff of case consultants. The consultant staff will respond to all consult requests in a timely fashion and will seek to facilitate reduction in ethical tensions and conflicts clarify confusions and to provide ethical counsel to requesting parties.

Essential Functions

Clinical Ethics

  • Provide expert ethical analysis for all clinical ethics case consultations across Corewell Health using a HIPAAcompliant webbased system.
  • Conduct realtime ethics consultations at assigned campuses including meeting and communicating with patients families clinicians and other stakeholders.
  • Lead oversight monitoring and documentation of all active ethics consult cases.
  • Facilitate and lead daily case review conference calls.
  • Collect analyze and report aggregate case data to support quality improvement and program evaluation.
  • Serve as core training faculty for Corewell Health clinical ethics consultants.
  • Participate in and support clinical ethics education initiatives including informational materials website content teleconferences and webinars.
  • Contribute to the strategic development assessment and continuous improvement of highquality ethics consultation standards practices and procedures across all Corewell Health sites.

Organizational Ethics

  • Assist with the review revision and development of clinical ethics policies across Corewell Health.
  • Conduct ethical analyses on special topics as requested by Corewell Health leadership and assigned by the Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA).

Administration

  • Participate on the Complex Care Committee and other institutional committees where ethics expertise is beneficial.
  • Serve as Acting Secretary to the Corporate Council on Clinical Ethics in the absence of the permanent Secretary.

Education

  • Participate in clinical ethics education for Corewell Health staff faculty and trainees as assigned.
  • Serve as a professional ethics resource for administrative clinical research and leadership teams as well as for designated community outreach initiatives.

Research

  • Conduct ongoing evaluation and research related to quality metrics for ethics consultation services.
  • Serve as an ethics advisor to the Corporate Institutional Review Board (IRB); completion of mandatory IRB training is required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Masters Degree in ethics or related discipline such as law medicine nursing philosophy theology social work or related field
  • 5 years of applied ethics preferably in a healthcare setting with documented experience in consultation teaching and policy development

Preferred

  • Doctorate in ethics or a related discipline such as law medicine nursing philosophy theology social work or a closely related field
  • 3 years of experience directing or managing an ethics program ethics committee or consultation service
  • CRT-Healthcare Ethics Consultant Certified (HEC-C) - American Society for Bioethics and Humanities American Society for Bioethics and Humanities within 1 year after hire
