Position Description:
Azure AVD Architect Role Overview
An Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) Architect is responsible for designing implementing optimizing and governing virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solutions on Microsoft Azure. The role blends cloud architecture identity networking security user experience automation and cost governance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Solution Architecture & Design
Design scalable secure multi-region AVD environments.
Select architecture patternspooled vs. personal desktops FSLogix profiles host pools application groups.
Design identity & access flows using Azure AD / Entra ID Conditional Access.
2. Implementation & Deployment
Deploy host pools session hosts images networking storage and profile containers.
Build custom gold images with tools like:
oAzure Image Builder
oShared Image Gallery
oFSLogix configuration
3. Integration & Infrastructure Components
Integrate AVD with:
oMicrosoft 365 (OneDrive Teams optimizations Outlook OST caching)
oAzure Files / NetApp Files for profiles
oIntune / Endpoint Manager for management
oAzure Monitor Log Analytics for monitoring
4. Performance & Optimization
Tune session host performance
Manage density (users per core)
Implement autoscaling and cost optimization strategies
5. Security & Compliance
Configure conditional access MFA zero-trust principles
Harden images and OS
Manage RBAC Just-in-Time access
6. Automation & DevOps
Use IaC for deployments:
oARM / Bicep
oTerraform
oAzure DevOps / GitHub Actions
7. Operations & Governance
Build monitoring dashboards
Create SOPs for incident change problem management
Govern cost usage and capacity

Role: Azure Virtual Desktop Architect
Experience: 815 years (minimum 3 years AVD specific)
Key Deliverables:
Design and implement enterprise AVD solutions
Develop automation scripts and IaC templates
Optimize Microsoft Teams M365 workloads on AVD
Configure networking storage profile containers image lifecycle
Provide Level 3 technical guidance
Lead migrations from Citrix/VMware to AVD
Recommended Certifications
AZ 305 Azure Solutions Architect Expert
AZ 140 Configuring and Operating Azure Virtual Desktop
AZ 104 Azure Administrator Associate
MS 102 Microsoft 365 Administrator (useful for Teams/Outlook in AVD)
