We are looking for a qualified Safety and Structures Engineer to provide expertise in the planning inspection and execution of road and infrastructure maintenance activities under our new IDC contract with NZTA serving the Manawatū and Whanganui regions. Commencing in May 2026 you will join a dedicated team responsible for road and footpath repairs street cleaning the management of streetlights and signs as well as drainage and vegetation maintenance.
This role is pivotal in ensuring the highest standards of minor safety and structural works. This will involve inspections working with NZTA engineers and consultants and determining the best designs/improvements related to road safety and asset structural improvements including compliance. It combines expert analysis and design with proactive safety management rigorous site inspections and effective risk mitigation. Youll provide authoritative technical guidance foster strong client and stakeholder relationships and drive continuous improvement through incident investigations and industry-leading documentation. Stay ahead of the curve with evolving regulations and best practices while championing a culture of safety and excellence across every project.
In addition to the above you will:
Conduct regular hands-on site visits to ensure construction aligns with approved plans safety protocols and regulatory standards
Resolve any structural or safety issues promptly using expert engineering solutions
Develop bespoke safety management plans to ensure every project is protected and compliant from day one
Carry out ongoing risk assessments and apply adaptive controls to keep hazards under control throughout the project lifecycle
Respond immediately to incidents and accidents undertaking thorough investigations and implementing effective corrective actions
Perform routine audits to maintain superior quality structural integrity and strict compliance with occupational health and safety standards
Collaborate closely with project managers foremen and contractors for seamless integration of safety and design operations
Maintain detailed records and provide transparent reporting to keep management and regulators fully informed and confident in project safety

Were looking for someone with:
Minimum of five years relevant engineering experience with a focus on structural systems and safety management ideally within New Zealand regulatory environment
Practical experience in conducting site inspections safety audits and risk assessments including the identification and resolution of hazards
Strong skills in preparing reviewing and managing technical documentation such as drawings specifications and reports
Proven history of engaging with clients contractors regulatory authorities and statutory bodies to ensure compliance and foster effective collaborations
Experience investigating safety incidents or structural failures including preparing reports with root cause analysis and recommendations
Bachelor of Engineering (BE) NZ Certificate in Engineering (NZCE) or similar diploma with extensive industry experience
Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with safety regulations and best practice in engineering
